November 5, 2013 (election day) at 7:00 p.m. (unless overseas deadline applies)

1 Local political subdivisions: county local propositions, cities, school districts, water districts, hospital districts, and any other local government entity that conducts elections. Many of these elections are conducted on the May uniform election date.

2 Filing deadlines: generally, the filing deadline is the 71st day prior to Election Day. (The new law about the 78th day before election day applies to the November general election date in even-numbered years). The Texas Election Code (the “Code”) may provide a different special election filing deadline. See Section 201.054 of the Code. Local political subdivisions, other than cities or school districts, might not have a "first day" to file. Write-in deadlines for general and special elections also vary.

3If no candidate for a four-year term has filed an application for a place on the ballot for a city office, the filing deadline for that office is extended to 5 p.m. of the 57th day before the election. See Section 143.008 of the Code.

4The county elections officer may be the county clerk, the county tax assessor-collector (if commissioners court transfers election duties to him/her), or the county elections administrator (if commissioners court creates the position).


Important 2014 Primary Election Dates


March 4, 2014 - Primary Election

First day to file for a place on the primary ballot for precinct chair candidates.

September 10, 2013

First day to file for all other candidates for offices that are regularly scheduled to be on the Primary ballot (as well as for offices for unexpired terms that have occurred after August 24, 2012).

November 9, 2013

Filing deadline for candidates; filing deadline for independent candidates to file intent declaration.

December 9, 2013

Early voting period for the primary election.

*First business day after Presidents' Day

Primary election.

Early voting period for the primary runoff election.

The November uniform election will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Eligible Texans who are not registered to vote must register by October 7, 2013 to vote in the November 5, 2013 election. The early voting period is October 21 – November 1. On the ballot will be constitutional amendments.
